چکیده
Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) is a noninvasive ultrasound modality that differentiates tissue structure via viscoelastic property. We are interested in using ARFI to discriminate between nonatherosclerotic arterial walls and atherosclerotic plaque. Both of these tissue types can be modeled as Kelvin materials each characterized by its own elasticity and viscosity. These properties define the displacement and recovery of tissue in response to ARFI. In this paper we present algorithms for clustering ARFI-induced displacement curves and we use the Kelvin model as a filter for outlier rejection. We validated these algorithms against a synthetic data set and then obtained preliminary results for an ARFI image of a raised focal atherosclerotic plaque in a porcine iliac artery.

Intravascular and Intracardiac Ultrasound Imaging
C onsiderable attention is currently being focused on the development of intravascular and intracardiac ultrasound imaging.1-4 Variously termed as "ultrasound angioscopy," "intravascular ultrasound imaging," or "intraluminal ultrasound imaging," this technique basically refers to the imaging modality of visualizing blood vessels and cardiac structures by an ultrasound transducer placed at the t...
متن کاملAutomatic IVUS Segmentation of Atherosclerotic Plaque with Stop & Go Snake
Since the upturn of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) as an imaging technique for the coronary artery system, much research has been done to simplify the complicated analysis of the resulting images. In this study, an attempt to develop an automatic tissue characterization algorithm for IVUS images was done. The first step was the extraction of texture features. The resulting feature space was us...
متن کاملInverse Problems in Imaging Systems and the General Bayesian Inversion Frawework
In this paper, first a great number of inverse problems which arise in instrumentation, in computer imaging systems and in computer vision are presented. Then a common general forward modeling for them is given and the corresponding inversion problem is presented. Then, after showing the inadequacy of the classical analytical and least square methods for these ill posed inverse problems, a Baye...
متن کاملTowards Guidance of Electrophysiological Procedures with Real-Time 3D Intracardiac Echocardiography Fusion to C-arm CT
This paper describes a novel method for improving the navigation and guidance of devices and catheters in electrophysiology and interventional cardiology procedures using volumetric data fusion. The clinical workflow includes the acquisition and reconstruction of CT data from a C-arm X-ray angiographic system and the real-time acquisition of volumetric ultrasound datasets with a new intracardia...
متن کاملIntravascular Ultrasound-Based Imaging of Vasa Vasorum for the Detection of Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Plaque
Vulnerable plaques are dangerous atherosclerotic lesions that bear a high risk of complications that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. These plaques are known to be chronically inflamed. The vasa vasorum (VV) are microvessels that nourish vessel walls. Proliferation of VV is part of the "response to injury" phenomenon in the process of plaque formation. Recent evidence has shown strong cor...
